The Firemen launched a hunger strike on 26.3.90 and declared that their action would last for one week until 1.4.90. Following a meeting between CSB and the staff representatives on 28.3.90, the staff called-off their action immediately. It was agreed at the meeting that the Government would set up a working party on 1.6.90
1.6.90 to review the proposal to reduce the conditioned working hours for Firemen from 60 to 48 a week if the Standing Commission could not arrive at a conclusion on the issue at its meeting on 11.4.90.

The Director of Fire
Fire Services has proposed to the Standing Committee on Disciplined Services Salaries and Conditions
Salaries Service that the working hours of Firemen be reduced from to 54 a week as an interim measure, pending the introduction of a 48-hour week. Firemen have asked for the immediate recognition of a 48-hour week as the proper working hours of firemen and for overtime to be paid on this basis. Standing Committee will consider the issue on 11 April and its recommendations will be submitted to the Executive Council on 24 April.

The FSD Local Officers Association launched a sit-in from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on 20.3.90 and 21.3.90 to protest against the disparity in pay between them and their counterparts in CSD and C&R.
