Grants and scholarships

No deduction will be made from the allowance as a result of any grant paid from an education authority, educational trust or other public or private body, provided that the total assistance received by the officer when taken together with the Government allowance does not exceed the inclusive boarding and tuition fee. A scholarship won by a child on a competitive basis will not be taken into account.

When officers are required to make refund of Boarding School Allowance. these will normally be calculated in accordance with the formula below :-

(B) Day School Allowance (DSA)

An officer may receive a Day School Allowance for a child attending a school in his country of origin, or the United Kingdom as the case may be, as a day pupil provided the spouse is not in the country to 100% after the child. If the spouse is in the country in which the child is being educated it will, subject to any submissions an officer may wish to make, be assured that the spouse can look after the child and the allowance will not be payable. If the spouse is in the country for only part of the year, or if the child attends school for less than one whole academic year, DSA may be payable on a pro-rata basis. The allowance will be at whatever rate is provided from time to time under the BSS. Details of current rates can be found in Annex 4.3 to Civil Service Regulations.

Day School Allowance is payable in arrears. Approval of an application of Day School Allowance. once given, will remain valid for such time as the particulars of the application remain unchanged and the rules for the payment of the allowance are complied with.
