In the United Kingdom distances are calculated from AA/RAC Members handbooks to/from the airport of arrival/departure from/to declared place of residence.
for officers who travel from other countries, payment will be limited to the actual rail fares (including sleepers) and/or sea fares (including cabins) of a class equivalent to Second Class rail and First Class sea in Great Britain.
When a journey within an officer's country of origin is of such a distance that air would be considered the normal means of travel (1.e. about 400 kilometres) the Government will either provide an air ticket or reimburse the officer for air travel by a scheduled flight, subject to production of receipt/used ticket.
The total amount payable will not exceed the aggregate of the amounts payable in respect of six adults, or of the number of family members travelling, whichever is the less.

Claims must be submitted to the Director of Accounting Services within six months of the journey being made. Points of departure and arrival must be shown on the claims.

When an officer goes on leave he is eligible for such travelling expenses only in his country of origin.
An officer who resigns and is not granted a homeward passage is not eligible for travelling expenses in his country of origin. Similarly an officer who is dismissed or whose sersvices are terminated without the grant of a homeward passage is not eligible for travelling expenses in his country of origin.
