POLISH REQUEST FOR CONSULATE IN HONG KONG
I shound reply to this. Dft plac
1. During Mrs Chalker's recent visit to Central and Eastern Europe, the Polish Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr Jan Majewski, hosted a dinner in Warsaw on 15 November in her honour. During the dinner, Mr Majewski made a verbal request for the opening of a Polish consulate in Hong Kong.
2. Mr Majewski's arguments for the consulate were economic: it would help develop Polish/Hong Kong business contacts and increase the flow of capital from Hong Kong to Poland. He was certainly in favour of resettling some Hong Kong Chinese in Poland. The Polish authorities could offer the lifting of trade restrictions (eg import quotas) on Hong Kong in return.

On timing, if the decision was favourable, Mr Majewski said he would be ready to open the consulate for commercial work at the very least January.
Finally, Mr Majewski added that he had very good contacts in Beijing. Make of that what you will!
