Freedom of artistic expression
Opposition from a small sector of the public to Hong Kong's participation in the Asian Games may re-emerge as the Games draw
near.
There is continuing concern that artistic freedoms may come under attack before or after 1997 as a result of pressure from China. This has not deterred several groups from staging performances to mark the events of June 1989.
There are signs that such opposition is in fact dying down in view of ASF & OC's decision to send a team.
Members of the arts
community have expressed concern, inter alia, that the Bill of Rights will not prevent curtailment of artistic expression if considered necessary on grounds of national security. They remain sceptical about China's commitment to artistic freedom given its track record.
