Hong Kong's participation in the Pacific Economic Cooperation

Conference (PECC)

Hong Kong is seeking to join the Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference

(PECC). Participation in PECC will help underline Hong Kong's autonomy in conducting its external commercial relations. It will also assert Hong Kong's presence and legitimacy as a key player in the Asia Pacific region and as a separate economic entity both before and after 1997. The Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic

Cooperation (HKCPEC) was set up in March 1990.

It lodged a formal application for full membership with PECC on 10 April 1990. The application was considered at the PECC Standing Committee on 4 May 1990, along with application from four Latin American Countries and Papua New Guinea. No decision was reached on all the applications and the matter

between PECC and APEC, Hong will be considered further

Kong's membership on PECC would lend a solid platform for joining APEC. China has already indicated in private that they saw no objection to Hong Kong joining PECC.

at the next Standing Committee Meeting to be held in Jakarta on 6-9 September 1990. Hong Kong will continue to press ahead with its efforts to secure full membership. this end, HKCPEC is stepping up its involvement in PECC activities.

Arrangements are also being made to send a good will mission to several ASEAN

countries to lobby for support for Hong Kong's application.
