11. As these enquiries are likely to take some time, it is important to apply for an entry clearance as soon as you know the details of the child. You must not make any arrangements for the child to travel until the entry clearance has been authorised.

12. We will let you know as soon as we have decided whether entry clearance should be granted or refused, by telephone if possible. If entry clearance is granted, the child will normally be admitted to the United Kingdom for a period of twelve months in the first instance. The fact that a child is admitted under these procedures does not in any way guarantee that a United Kingdom Court will grant an adoption order in respect of the child.

AFTER THE CHILD ARRIVES

13. Shortly before the expiry of any period for which the child has been admitted, you should apply to the Home Office for an extension of the child's stay forwarding his or her passport. You should also send evidence that an application for an adoption order has been made to the Court giving, if possible, the date fixed for the Court hearing. If there is a long delay in arranging the adoption, it may be necessary to apply for further extensions of stay in the same way. If an adoption order is made, you should send the child's passport to the Home Office again, with a copy of the adoption order, and it will be endorsed showing that there is no longer any restriction on the child's stay. If at least one of the adopters is a British citizen, the child would automatically become a British citizen from the date of the adoption order.
