They arrived at TAI PING at about 1600 hrs. on 25-4-90. The courier immediately went to buy a motorized junk at a cost about RMB $5,000 - RMB $6,000. Then 28 of them boarded the junk at 1900 hrs. and set sail immediately. As they did not know about the route and were afraid that they had not enough fuel, they stopped at SHE KOU (北口 ) for buying some fuel and asked the routing to Hong Kong. At about 0400 hrs. on 26-4-90, they continued their voyage and eventually arrived in Hong Kong after about 3 hours.

They were all land-crossers to China via the Sino-Vietnamese border.

Six of them had knowledge of the screening policy. 1 through the press, 1 by letter, 1 through radio (BBC) and 3 by hearsay.

Only 1 of them had knowledge of the mandatory repatriation through the press.

5 stopovers in China but they had not encountered any PRC officials.

None of them had heard of the news that they would be placed on a deserted island after their arrival in Hong Kong.

They had encountered about 120 - 130 other VBP at DONG XING(), CHINA. They also desired to come to Hong Kong.

Their vessel was bought in China but they had no knowledge about the registration no. of the vessel nor the seller/owner. No Chinese official was involved.
