Description of Voyage

Boatmaster : NGUYEN VAN LE

NGUYEN VAN LE was the organizer who planned the exodus 4 months ago. He recruited the boatmates whom he met while he was in prison. Each family had to pay 2 taels of gold for the escape. They had to choose a sea route to Hong Kong because they were ethnic Vietnamese from the South. As they could not speak Cantonese, they knew they would be repatriated to Vietnam by Chinese officials if they were intercepted at the Sino-Vietnamese border. Furthermore, NGUYEN's wife had some very good connections with government officials in CAM PHA, N.VN; her uncle, DOAN VAN LOI, could arrange an escape boat for them.

This group left HAM TAN, THUAN HAI, S.VN. on 2-3-90 by bus. They arrived HA NOI, N.VN on 4-3-90 and continued then journey to CAM PHA on the same day. It took DOAN VAN LOI quite a while to arrange the escape boat for the group.

The boat cost 6 taels of gold. They brought with them 100 kg. of rice, so litres of water, 100 litres of fuel and some small quantity of pork and fish. They left CAM PHA at 2000 hrs. on 21-3-90. On 23-3-90, they
