Rape and Indecent Assault

There were 120 rape cases reported in 1989, an increase

of 23 from 1988. The total number of indecent assaults on females was

1 019, up by 10.5% compared with 1988.

Homicide

Of the total number of homicides which occurred in 1989, 77 or 75.5% were already detected. When analysing by motive, 28 cases resulted from disputes, 14 from robberies, 5 from gang attack and 6 from arson.

Snatching

A total of 1 478 snatching cases were recorded in 1989, a rise of 8.4% over the 1988 figure of 1 364.

Pickpocketing

15.

Offences of pickpocketing dropped by 39.1% to 972 cases

compared with 1 595 recorded in 1988.

Shop Theft

16.

The total number of reported shoptheft offences in 1989 was 5 140, a decrease of 471 or 8.4% from 1988. There were 1 758 juveniles arrested for these offences compared with 2 274 in 1988. Juveniles aged under 16 were involved in 35% of all reported shopthefts, compared with 39% in 1988.

Vehicle Crime

The total number of the offences of taking conveyance/theft of vehicle in 1989 was 4 476, up by 24.2% from 1988. Of these, 70% have already been recovered. There were 5 151 cases of theft from vehicle in 1989, a decrease of 1.2% compared with 1988.
