A total of 17 721 violent crimes were recorded in 1989, a

rise of 1 997 cases or 12.7% over 1988. The rise in violent crimes

was due to an increase in numbers of offences of robbery, wounding and

serious assault which constituted about 77.9% of total violent crimes.

There were 9 523 victims of violent crimes who were wounded or killed

in 1989.

Preventive Crime

There were 3 763 preventive crimes recorded in 1989, an

increase of 22.2% compared with 1988. Of these, 64.6% were arrests

made for the offences of unlawful possession, possession of offensive

weapon and loitering. Within the category of preventive crimes, the

offences of unlawful possession registered the largest increase of 274

cases. Almost 50% of the persons arrested for this offence group were of ages between 16 and 30 years.
