1. Chinese concern over subversion dates from reaction in

Hong Kong to the Tiananmen Square incident.

2. The Chinese have, however, renewed their complaints

through other channels whenever they feel they have cause eg

a demarche by the Chinese Embassy here and by NCNA in Hong Kong in May about the activities of the Federation for

Democratic Union (FCO telno 372 and Hong Kong telno 1428);

an NCNA demarche in May about the Hong Kong Alliance for the

promotion of Democracy in China (Hong Kong telno 1575); a

demarche by the MFA to the Embassy in Peking about

activities in Hong Kong to commemorate 4 June (Peking telno

797); and a similar demarche to protest about the shooting incident in Hong Kong in which a NCNA office was hit (Peking

telno 841). The Chinese did however seem to be content with

the way we handled the Goddess of Democracy issue (Peking

telno 707).
