ISLAND DEVELOPMENT/IMMIGRATION/RESETTLEMENT /

GROTE

DEVELOPMENT

Census result published on 2 January shows growth

of 5.6% over 1980. Population increased from 1,813 to

1919. First increase since 1930.

Falkland Islands Development Corporation (PIDC), established 1983, helped create 35 new sheep farms through subdivision of larger properties.

Infrastructure destroyed in conflict now repaired: water and power supply, new roads with plans for new telephone system and fuel supply arrangements.

Development projects: woolen mill and dairy now

operating. Crab meat from inshore fisheries project

being sent to Britain.

Off-shore fishery: through joint ventures with

foreign fleets and local fishery-related projects offers Islands prospect of diversifying economy.

ASSISTANCE WITH IMMIGRATION

FIG have set up a limited scheme to assist a handful of skilled people already assured of jobs and

accommodation in the Islands with the expenses of

moving.

WHY NOT resettle ISLANDERS?

Islanders have repeatedly made clear their wish to

remain on the Islands under British sovereignty: in

elections (October 1985); to Ministers on their visits

to the Islands (Lady Young in February 1986).

This is not a matter on which a monetary price can

be placed.
