The hectic pace of developments in Eastern Europe last year, the
democratisation of those countries and their efforts to establish
market economies will, in the longer term, open up massive trading
opportunities. In the shorter term, there will be major
opportunities in some key areas (particularly in the context of
projects and programmes financed by aid packages) but the markets
of Eastern Europe will remain comparatively difficult places in
which to do business.
Rest assured, however, that HMG's commitment to strengthening and
further developing trade links with Hong Kong will remain strong.
The Pacific Rim, of which Hong Kong forms a key part, is widely
predicted to become the most dynamic growth area in the world;
not surprisingly it is one of the main priority areas in the
British Overseas Trade Board's Forward Plan. The Board attaches
particular importance to the development of trade in the markets of
the Pacific Rim and is encouraging a continuing awareness programme
in the UK in order to alert businesses to the opportunities
available for both exports and investment.
