As the party broke up I took the opportunity to say to Wu privately in Chinese that I hoped that on his return he would take the message to "Chinese leaders" that the British Government attached great importance to the rebuilding of bilateral relations. He looked slightly startled but then rallied to assure me that he would. I have now had an invitation to a return match tonight at the Chinese Embassy but cannot unfortunately make it.

5. It occurs to me that, if Wu is a reasonably regular visitor to Hong Kong, there would be advantage in the HKG getting alongside him to give him a full tour of the

territory. Not every visitor to Hong Kong has quite such good lines to the top.
