MR MAUDE'S VISIT TO HONG KONG, 6-11 APRIL
1. The Secretary of State has given approval for Mr Maude to visit Hong Kong from 6-11 April. This visit will be taking place around the time when the Hong Kong Nationality Bill will be introduced in Parliament.
2. Mr Maude would like Mrs Maude to accompany him on this visit. He thinks that it would help from a presentational point of view to explain this as one of his routine visits to Hong Kong, rather than as a response to the introduction of the Bill.
3.
Mr Maude will have many pressures on his time while in Hong Kong and Mrs Maude could usefully take on some of the visits which he will not be able to undertake himself. He thinks for example that it would be helpful if Mrs Maude (who is an architect) could visit the Land Development Corporation and see something of their urban renewal projects. She might also visit the Kowloon Walled City to look at the progress on the clearance project.
4. Mr Maude would therefore be grateful for the Secretary of State's agreement that Mrs Maude might accompany him on this visit at public expense. I submit a draft letter from you to PS/No.10 which you might send, if the Secretary of State
agrees.
