The Joint Declaration provides for the UK to establish a Consulate-General in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. We attach considerable importance to maintaining a prestigious presence to show our continued commitment to

Hong Kong after 1997 and to match our continuing interests.

We have been discussing with the Hong Kong Government a suitable site: as soon as possible an announcement will be

made.
