Problem

1. A letter from Dr John Reid MP to Mr Garel-Jones about a visit to Hong Kong and China later this month by

Mr Brian Dempsey of SL Property Information Ltd of Glasgow.

Recommendation

2. I submit a self explanatory draft reply. The Department

of Trade and Industry have been consulted. The British

Trade Commission and our Embassy in Peking have been

informed.

Background

3. In view of the lack of clarity in Dr Reid's letter, and

the shortage of time before Mr Dempsey's departure, we have spoken to him direct seeking confirmation of his wishes and giving him the relevant details. Mr Demspey was most

grateful.
