FOREWORD
The political values espoused and practised by member-parties of the International Democrat Union (IDX) provide the impetus that results in higher standards of living und better quality of life for their citizens: the improving global human rights situation; the creation of world peace through strength and unflinching resolve: and the political foundation upon which a dynamic future is assured for succeeding generations.
Launched in 1983 with many of the leading Christian-Democrat. Conservative. Centre and like- minded parties from the industrialised democracies of the world, and strengthened further by members from the Caribbean and Latin-America, the IDU is the most broadly représentative international political organisation of its kind, representing more than 170 million voters in 27 countries.
The IDU Declaration of Principles, upon which the co- operation of member-parties is founded, is a clear statement in favour of the free, open and democratic society, the socially- oriented market economy, the rule
of law, social justice, the narural role of the family and a society where conditions are created to cnuble everyone to reach their full potential and to carry out their responsibilities to their fellow men and women. It is a declaration that states clearly what the IDU is for and not merely what it is against. The IDU's inter-party co-operation is based on these principles rather than the name of any political party.

Since its creation, the work of the IDU has grown considerably, building upon the deepening co- operation between Member- Parties and the regional unions the European Democrat Union (EDU), the Pacific Democrat Union (PDU) and the Carribean Democrat Union (CDU).
