QUESTION (Charles Watson, ICHT Radio, Taiwan);
Given that the Joint Declaration and the international
covenant which will form the basis of the Bill of Rights are logged
with the United Nations, if the Basic Law seers incompatible in any
way what will Britain's response be?
FOREIGN SECRETARI:
The Basic Law includes, I think it is Article 39,
includes specific provision in its present draft for the two
principal United Nations covenants which deal with buman rights.
So, so far so good.
QUESTION:
The press and levels of democracy which were stated in the
Joint Declaration and are discussed on non-official levels, if
those are not so much contravened but if the Basic Law standing is
not what Britain wants, how will Britain react?
FOREIGN SECRETARY:
We have made representations to the People's Republic about
various parts of the draft Basic Law and we will continue to do so.
