TRANSCRIPT B: FOREIGE SRC P.C. HONG KONG 16 JAT 90

-7-

FOREIGN SECRETARY (CORTD):

is Hong Kong and our responsibility to rake judgements and take

decisions in the long-term interests of Hong Kong so long as we are

the sovereign power; the obligation to make sense, in terms of Hong

Kong, of the Joint Declaration.

That is the main component of our dealings with China and I

an glad of the opportunity here to make that clear.

SINO VALTON (THE SUE):

Mr. Hurd, many countries have criticised Britain's policy of

forcible reptatration as being very cruel.

Did the nature of your reception at the boat people's camp

today the polite reception, the peaceful protest and the ranks of

-

well-behaved children make you have any second thoughts about

Britain's decision?

FOREIGY SECRETARY:

I do not think many countries have denounced it as cruel.

The criticisms have certainly come but they, on the whole, have not

been as fierce criticises as I personally had expected because I

think there is now a greater understanding of what Hong Kong has

accepted and endured as a result of its willingness to receive boat

people.
