3.
Mr Kovacs raised the question of Hong Kong's relations with Hungary.
He said that when he had visited London in
November 1989 he had received an encouraging answer on the question of greater Hungarian representation in Hong Kong. Hungary wanted to open a commerical office or a consulate.
Mr Tait said that he believed this question had been addressed during the visit of the Secretary of State to
Hungary. He agreed to look into this question and to ensure
that a reply had now been sent.
4. Mr Kovacs finally raised the question of the Prince and Princess of Wales' visit in May. A change in government
would not mean any change in the level of hospitality or
welcome offered to the Prince and Princess of Wales. But he
was not sure who the Prince and Princess of Wales' host
would be. He added that it was unlikely to be Mr Szuros,
but the speaker of the newly constituted Hungarian Parliament. He concluded, saying that there would be no major changes in Hungarian foreign policy under a new
government. The major plank would remain the establishment of closer relations with the European community. Mr Tait said that we looked forward to continued cooperation with
Hungary.
