CONCLUSION:

BARRIE WIGGHAM/AUST PAGE 6

1. Every effort should be made to follow up the visit you have made

to Australia so as to give an impression of continuing interest on the part of the Hong Kong Government.

2. This can be done initially through letters to the various

parties followed as soon as the Basic Law is promulgated with additional detailed information and assurances.

3. There should be a follow up visit targetted to the Chinese

community in Australia.

4. Media monitoring should be instituted now.

5. Regular information flows of relevant Hong Kong material

for Australian media should be instituted as soon as possible.

6. A media contact should be appointed in Australia with

immediate effect.

7. Consideration should be given to a programme through which selected business and media people can be encouraged to visit Hong Kong.

8. Future visits to Australia by Hong Kong Government officials

should allow for at least limited contact with selected government/business/media figures.

M

9. Obviously there are areas of business and government which

did not feature in the itinerary just completed in business, for example, the Institute of Directors, the Law Society, the Institute of Accountants and a short list should be compiled for inclusion in mailings of relevant information and for future contact with the Hong Kong Government and officials who may visit Australia.

10. Bearing in mind that Australia will elect a new Government on

March 24, the need to contact/meet relevant Ministers/senior officials post-March 24 should be assessed.
