SECRETARY OF STATE'S TALKS WITH MR NAKA

NAKATAMA, JAPANESE

FOREIGN MINISTER, 12 JANUARY 1990

1.

This is to confirm that the Secretary of State will be holding one hour of talks with Nakayama on 12 January, before the talks between the Prime Minister and Mr Kaifu at No 10, which both the Secretary of State and Mr Nakayama will also be attending.

2.

One hour with interpretation is not long. We have proposed that the Secretary of State and Mr Nakayama should cover the following subjects:

(i) (ii)

King

Hong/Vietnamese Boat People (HKD and SEAD) China (FED)

(iii) Cambodia (SEAD)

(iv)

(v)

Air Services - UK/Japan and Hong Kong (MAED and

HKD)

Bilateral relations including trade (FED and

DTI)

As we agreed on the telephone, I should be grateful if you could supply contributions in final form, with the same heading as this minute. I should be grateful for six copies; two on blue (Lord Brabazon is likely to attend the talks), and four on white by cop on Friday 5 January please.
