HOUSTON ECONOMIC SUMMIT: BILATERAL MEET ING

In your letter of 22 June, you said that the

Prime Minister would be content to see Mr Kaifu for a

bilateral during the Houston Summit, and would prefer the

July

morning of Monday of 9 June.

The Japanese have now asked whether it would be

possible for the bilateral to take place on Sunday 8 July.

I should be grateful for advice. If the Prime Minister

agrees, it would perhaps be possible to arrange a meeting

after the lunch with the Conservatives Abroad, at perhaps

2pm, in the Prime Minister's suite. The Japanese have

proposed the following subjects for discussion:

Exchange of views on topics to be taken at the Summit:

(i) assistance to the Soviet Union.

(ii) policy towards China

(iii) any other issues that the UK may wish to raise

Topics not to be discussed at the Summit:

(i) EC integration

(ii) bilateral UK/Japanese relations

ہے

We do not propose to recommend any additional items

for

the Prime Minister to raise with Mr Kaifu, in view of the

SG2ACQ
