Thank you for your letter of 11 October enquiring about the possibility of providing assistance to HMOCS officers wishing to find jobs in the UK after 1997.
I understand that the Director of Special Branch in Hong Kong is in touch with a number of UK authorities with a view to finding alternative employment for Special Branch officers. In the first instance, therefore, it would be advisable for you to discuss this matter with the Director, who will know what opportunities are likely to be available to you.
As far as employment with the Foreign Office or other Government Departments is concerned, recruitment is generally through the Civil Service Commission, who have I gather already sent you details of the various methods of entry. In addition a small number of vacancies arise from time to time in the Specialist Grades of our own Home Civil Service cadre including Investigating Officers and Overseas Security Inspectors. Such vacancies are advertised in the national press, but given their ad hoc nature, it is not possible for us accurately to predict future demand.
With regard to employment in the UK private sector, all professional and executive recruitment agencies operate on a license issued by the Government. It would be advisable for any HMOCS members who are interested to contact several of these agencies with a view to employment in a professional capacity.
The Overseas Development Administration is willing to hear from professional staff wishing to work in the developing world, not necessarily in the Dependent Territories.
