Text of plea to the Malaysian Prime Minister and

to the Governor of Penang requesting the commutation

of death sentence passed on Derrick Gregory in the

event that this is upheld by the Penang Pardons Board.

I know that the judicial process concerning

Derrick Gregory, a British citizen, has been

completed, and I understand that the Penang Pardons

Board have now rejected the plea for commutation

of the death sentence passed on him for drug

trafficking.

I in no way wish to question the decisions of

Malaysian courts. I do, however, urge you to consider,

for humanitarian reasons, whether it would be

possible to commute the death sentence. I would

ask you to bear in mind that Derrick Gregory

committed the offence before the death penalty for

drug trafficking became mandatory in Malaysia.

Yours sincerely

MARGARET THATCHER
