There are an estimated 3.25 million Hong Kong Chinese who already

hold or are entitled to British Dependent Territories Citizens

passports in Hong Kong.

There are estimated to be a further 2 million who may qualify for

registration for such passports prior to 1997.

After 1997 these BDTCs, if they apply, will be entitled to hold British National (Overseas) passports, and these passports will continue to be issued after 1997.

The package of measures to give some people in Hong Kong the confidence to remain in the territory has not yet been finalised.

- Under the terms of the memoranda associated with the Joint

Declaration, the Chinese Government have accepted that British

National (Overseas) passports may continue to be used for travel

after 1997.
