The following explanatory note on these items may

be helpful:

As previously advised, a contract for $14.5-m. for Equipment and Installation of a Territory-wide VHF/FM System has been signed for quite some time.

We will purchase new AM Transmission Equipment as well as new Studio Equipment to enhance our overall Sound Quality, which at today's prices will be another $12.3-m, thus making a commitment of $26.8-m. A further $1.2-m. is needed for Ancillary Equipment for the transmitters

and for the reconditioning of the antenna, ground radial system and for a triplexer to enable three transmitters to use one common antenna. thus bringing

the total to $28-m. Transmission Equipment prices are

based on 20-KW transmitters as we seek to increase our signal strength from 10-KW to 20-KW, for with the proliferation of high rise structures we will need all

the signal strength we can get.

Our own estimate of the premium for the continued use of the land occupied by our Peng Chau Transmitting Station after August 1989 will be in the region of

$5-m. Since we intend to continue to use this site

for our AM Transmissions, this sum, together with

renovation costs of $1-m. at Peng Chau, will bring

the total firm commitments under this head to $34-m.

Other proposed Capital Investment commitments as

previously stated are:

Replacement of Studio to Transmitter Link Equipment:

It is proposed to replace the studio to transmitter

link equipment for our Chinese Services. The

estimated cost is $300,000. In the current financial

year, we have committed a sum of $138,000 for the replacement of studio to transmitter link equipment for our English Service due to the return of the FM

frequency to the Post Office.
