4.1 Listening to domestic radio on shortwave

Radio Tanpa, a commercial station, broadcasts on shortwave to Japan. 5.7% of the sample listen to Radio Tanpa broadcasts, including 2.7% who tune in at least once a week. Again, better educated men are most likely to listen to Radio Tanpa.

12.9% of the Radio Tanpa listeners contacted (0.7% of the sample) sometimes listen to Canada This Week, a Radio Canada International programme broadcast on Radio Tanpa once a week on Saturdays.

4.2 Listening to foreign radio on shortwave

1.6% of the sample had listened to foreign radio on shortwave in 12 months preceding interview. In addition, 4.1% had listened to shortwave broadcasts some time in the past.

The majority of former shortwave listeners were better educated people aged between 20 and 49, mostly living in large cities. The great majority had no special reason for giving up listening to shortwave broadcasts.
