1988
A SUMMARY OF FEEDBACK FROM LISTENERS ́ LETTERS RECEIVED IN THE LAST FULL YEAR (1988) AND
IN THE LAST QUARTER (MARCH - MAY 1989)
3,554 letters were received, 97% of which came from Japan. Reception reports requesting QSL cards and requests for the Japanese Service programme guide accounted for a large proportion of the mailbag. However, many letters also contained feedback on the Japanese Service output, particularly the news and current affairs coverage. Of other programmes, the English lessons and Programmes on science, new ideas and tourism received the most mentions.
The coverage of Emperor Hirohito's illness (and his death and funeral in 1989) attracted a considerable amount of feedback. Many listeners expressed their appreciation of the BBC's discussion of the Emperor's role during World War II, stating that the Japanese media would not cover this subject.
