PS/Mr Maude

MEDIA INTERVIEWS: SUNDAY 17 DECEMBER 1989

1.

We have received two bids for this Sunday:

(i)

(ii)

the David Frost Programme which is put out by LWT between

8.00 am and 9.25 am. They would like the Minister for a

one-to-one interview with David Frost lasting approximately 12 minutes. This would focus principally on the boat people problem but would range more widely

and would include something about the Minister himself

(the Producer describes the Minister as 'the man of the

moment') and possibly other current topics. This would

mean an early start and the Minister would have to be at

the studios by 0745;

BBC TV's "On The Record". This would be a one-to-one interview with Jonathan Dimbleby lasting approximately 10 minutes. The subject would be the boat people. (If an annoucement had been made on nationality they would also

have included this). The interview`would be the lead

item and would go out after the news at 1303. The

Minister would have to be at BBC TV Centre 2 in Wood Lane

by 1245;

2. We see no particular advantage in the Minister accepting the

David Frost interview. Frankly, it is our information that few

people watch this programme as it goes out too early on a Sunday morning. But we would recommend that the Minister accept the bid

from "On The Record".
