restraining force and maintain a healthy political equilibrium. The leftists should have a broad mind and vision and seek to enlist the support of the Hong Kong people with their pragmatic style and foresight.
If the intermediate forces will assume power in future, those out of office would be the leftists and the rightists. If only the rightists remain, the intermediate forces would inevitably lean to the right and the political situation of Hong Kong is also going to take a right-turn. This is detrimental to the policy of Beijing, which aims at using Hong Kong to its long-term advantage and, through the device. of "one country, two system, hopes to maintain a harmonious relation between Hong Kong and the mainland, keep Hong Kong unchanged for 50 years and preserve the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong. Neither would this do any good to the peaceful reversion of Taiwan to the mainland.
Whether the leftists can become middle-of-the-roaders is not up to the leftists alone, it would also depend on the wish of the rightists and foreign forces. The low profile adopted by the leftists is dictated by the needs of the times. But should the leftists turn to the middle course and abandon their own stand, they may lose the support of the masses as well as rendering their own existence meaningless.
