The Development Fund was created on 31st March. 1987 to reserve an initial amount of £2m for the building of new laboratories at Sutton. The costs of examining the feasibility of this development are deducted from the fund.

Most of The Institute properties are laboratories. In addition some residential property is owned and used for letting to visiting scientists or students. Full market rents are charged to visiting workers. Students are charged approximately one third of their stipend.

It is The Institute policy to ensure that all its inventions are exploited firstly for the public good and secondly that a fair proportion of any subsequent financial benefits are retained by The Institute. The Institute operates closely with The Royal Marsden Hospital and co-ordinates these activities through the ICR/RMH Joint Committee for Comercial Liaison.

The Institute's properties were last valued

in the year ended 31st March 1986 and these values have been increased to take account of inflation in accordance with advice received from our insurance brokers. It is envisaged that the next valuation will take place in the year ending 31st March 1990.

The Institute has committed £465,000 (1986 £450,000) from its General Fund for research projects over the next three years in the following sections: Medicine £355,000 Epidemiology £60,000 and Biomolecular Structure £50,000.
