The Sections of Biology and Surgery and Human Genetics were disbanded on 1st April, 1987 and 30th September, 1987 respectively. The research teams in these Sections were reallocated to the Sections of Pathology, Medicine and the new Section of Human Cancer Genetics which was created on 1st October, 1987.

The accounts are prepared under the historical cost convention. (ii) Property, Buildings and Fixed Plant

The costs of property, building and fixed plant held for the purposes of research have been fully written off due to their specialised nature. No account is taken of the value of the residential property used to accommodate visiting scientists and students.

(iii) Equipment

The value of equipment donated or purchased during the year is written off in the Income and Expenditure Account.

(iv) Stock

The Institute takes no account of the value of items in stock at the year end.

(v) Investments

Investments are included in the Balance Sheet at cost; or if bequeathed to The Institute, at probate value, or if given to The Institute, at market value at the date of the gift. Investments held overseas have been converted at the rates of exchange at the date of purchase, probate or gift.

The accounts disclose all the information required by the Companies Act 1985. In the opinion of the Committee of Management no useful additional information would be disclosed by a Source and Application of Funds Statement and no Statement has been prepared.

Research Section costs include £12,000 for visiting workers expenses funded by external grants (1987: £14.000) and equipment valued at £13,000 and £14,000 that was purchased by, and remains the property of, the Leukaemia Research Fund and the Cancer Research Campaign respectively.

(ii) Scientific Services

Trading Services

These services sell their service or product to research teams. The prices charged are intended to cover only the direct costs of salaries and running expenses; equipment and the related overhead costs are financed either by The Institute solely, or jointly with the Cancer Research Campaign/Medical Research Council.

Non-Trading Services

For these services it is not cost effective to set up and administer such an internal sales mechanism and they are directly financed by The Institute solely, or jointly with the Cancer Research Campaign/Medical Research Council.

(i) Research

The Institute is divided into Research Sections according to general objectives but this does not militate against inter- disciplinary work. Sections consist of a number of teams each comprising a group of staff working together on one or more research projects.

The principal research activities are reviewed quinquennially by the Cancer Research Campaign/Institute of Cancer Research Joint Scientific Committee. The cost of approved research is aggregated and an annual award is made to The Institute. These arrangements take into account the need for an expansion or orderly reduction of activities and the reallocation of resources.

Research Sections are as follows:

The production of Hybridomas and Oligonucleotides commenced in October 1986 and February 1987 respectively. In accordance with normal Institute practice the services will have a subsidised trial period of two years. It is the intention that these services should be self financing by 31st March, 1990.
