waste,
During 1988 a further 3800 tonnes per day of
mostly scrap steel, paper, and aluminium cans were
separated by private operators from the waste stream and
exported for recycling as substitutes for various raw
materials.
2.4
Over the past 15 years the
amount of solid and
se mi solid wastes has increased three ti me s, roughly in
line with the increase in Gross Domestic Product. If this
continues the a mount of waste generated each day is
forecast to rise to 30,000 tonnes per day by the year
2001.
Failure to deal effectively with this growing amount
of wastes can gi ve rise to severe pollution of our air,
water and land, as well as the risk of poisoning by
chemical wastes and the spread of disease from hospital
wastes, decomposing carcasses and other organic
matter.
