His Excellency The Ambassador.

The Royal Thai Embassy,

30 Queens Gate,

London

S. V. 7

Your Excellency,

I think you may know of me because of my long association with the Ockenden Venture which has done good work for refugees in Thailand and has greatly valued the good relationship with your Government at every level: This applied, also, to the magnificent Festival of many aspects of Thai life in Britain last year.

I am now writing in my capacity as Chairman of the Asian Committee of the British Refugee Council to express my concern at the news given to me by Amnesty International of the 22 Burmese students who had fled from Purna following the military takeover in September 1998 and have been returned against their will to Burma where their lives may be at risk.

These problems were brought up at a recent meeting of the Executive of the Ockenden Venture and because of our good relations I was asked to raise the issue with you, partly to indicate our concern but, also, to seek further information. I shall also report on your reply to the British Refugee Council.

Yours sincerely.

Lord Ennals
