Thank you for your telephone call of 26 May to the Private Office of the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. It was very useful to have your assessment of the current mood in Hong Kong.

Since your call, events have taken a tragic turn for the worse in China, with a consequent impact on public opinion in Hong Kong.

I enclose copies of the Brime Minister's statements of 25 May and

4 June, together with the Secretary of State's statement of 6 June. I think those will give you a clear picture of where the Government stands on this situation.

I can assure you that Her Majesty's Government attach the highest importance to developments in China, and their effects on public morale in Hong Kong.
