Progress of

Bay nuclear power station construction The nuclear island project is making steady progress. The large globe-shaped safety shell of the first reactor has been erected, and the internal structure of the solidly-built shell will soon be completed. Three water tanks for maintaining the safe operation of the power plant have been delivered to the construction site from France and have been installed. The construction of the second reactor's plant is slightly ahead of schedule, and the construction of the safety shell is being conducted smoothly. The steel internal layer has been built and is 18 m tall. The plant for handling nuclear fuel and the plant for supporting nuclear equipment are also being built smoothly. The two nuclear reactors are equipped with diesel generators for emergency use, and the oil tanks for these generators have also been installed.

The projects related to the conventional islands have also advanced smoothly. Each conventional island will be equipped with a 90bn kW turbogenerator. The concrete structure project of the first turbine plant has been completed, and the foundation for the turbogenerator and the steel structure of the roof will soon be complete. The second turbine plant project has been started.

There is strict supervision over quality control and guarantee. The Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Company has set up a quality guarantee station to exercise general supervision over every project in the nuclear power station. From 1987 to May this year, the quality guarantee station carried out more than 60 overall inspections and 1,748 routine checks in the main plants of the nuclear island, the conventional islands and the supporting facilities, where the HCCM Nuclear Power Construction Joint Company is responsible for the civil engineering projects. Gezhouba power station project goes into trial operation The Gezhouba power station on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province began to transmit electricity to Shanghai on a trial basis on 17th August after a 500 kW direct- current transmission project was completed. The 1,052 km transmission lines run from the Gezhouba power station in Yichang to the Nanqiao sub-station on the outskirts of Shanghai via Anhui, Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces. The whole project consists of transmission lines, two sub-stations each with a capacity of 1.2m kW, a carrier relay station and 38 digital microwave telecommunication stations. 37.5bn tons. The biggest coal mines in China include the Xinglongzhuang and Baodian mines in Yanzhou county, Shandong Province, Panji No 1 mine in Huainan, Jiangsu Province, and Xiqu mine in Gujiao, Shanxi Province. Each of these mines has an annual capacity of 3m tons. The Antaibao open-cast coal mine located in the Pingshuo coalfield in Shanxi Province is the biggest of its kind in China. It was put into operation in 1987, with an annual capacity of 15m tons.

The biggest coal washeries in China include the Xinglongzhuang washery in Yanzhou, the washery of Yangquan No 1 coal mine, Shanxi Province, the washery of Panji No 1 coal mine in Huainan, Jiangsu Province, and Xiqu washery in the Gujiao coalfield in Shanxi Province. Each of them has a capacity of 3m tons.

It is estimated that China will produce more than 1bn tons of coal this year. (Xinhua in English 0723 gmt 22 Aug 89)

INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION

Light industry in first half of 1989 The total value of China's light industrial production in the first half of this year was over 115bn yuan, accounting for 49% of the annual plan. With an average monthly increase of 10%, the growth rate was in keeping with the plan projected by the Ministry of Light Industry.

In the first quarter of this year, the total value of the nation's light industrial production was 5bn yuan more than in the same period last year. Of this, household electrical products accounted for about 50%. The growth of household electrical products covered up the fact that there was a drop in the production of a large variety of people's daily necessities. Some industries and products which should be developed according to our capability have developed too rapidly. For example, the production of refrigerators rose by 49% and that of washing machines by 31.9%. Actual output and production capacity for some products, which consume a lot of energy, grain, foreign exchange, went out of control. For example, the output of air conditioners and vacuum cleaners rose by over 200%.

The situation took a turn for the better at the end of the second quarter. Of the 18 major light industrial products vital to the people's daily life, the output of 13 products registered an increase over the same period of last year, with salt increasing by 24%, sugar by 10.3%, paper by 4.7% and synthetic detergent by 1.9%. Output of refrigerators, washing machines and beer, which can reabsorb a lot of currency, rose by between 9% and 34%, which represents marked drop over the first quarter. The output of tins, ceramics, carpets etc, which can earn much foreign exchange, increased by between 12.9% and 24%. The output of white wine, which consumes a great deal of energy and grain and which should be restricted in production, dropped by 11.5% over the same period of last

year.
