DRAFT REPLY FOR PM TO SEND TO ELEFRIENDS ET AL
Thank
on
you for your telex of 11 October about the debate
currently underway, at the Conference of the Parties to CITES the controls it would be appropriate for the international community to impose on the trade in African Elephant ivory,
I imagine that in the heightened atmosphere surrounding the Conference, rumour and counter rumour abound, but the UK Government's position on these issues has always been, and remains, very clear, To counteract the misrepresentation
that has appeared in some of our national newspapers, David Trippier, Minister for the Environment and Countryside, yesterday issued the attached statement reiterating our position.
You may be assured that the UK delegation is playing, and will continue to play, a full part in the proceedings of the Conference with the clear objective
objective of seeking the best means of securing the future of the species.
