The overseas media have given the issue considerable play. Locally, the subject has not attracted as much media coverage, and the general public has shown little interest. However, those who are directly involved in the trade have staged a demonstration objecting to the import bans imposed by Japan, EC and the USA.

A press release will be issued by the Director of Agriculture and Fisheries to report the results of his meeting with overseas government officials and conservationists. A media briefing will also be arranged. As things develop at the CITES conference, subsequent press releases will be issued

as necessary.
