EC CITES MEETING 27-28 JULY 1989

A draft EC Regulation banning issue of import permits for raw and worked ivory from the African elephant was accepted on a qualified majority. (Denmark and Germany abstained).

The exceptions to the ban are:-

i. musical instruments containing parts made of ivory proven to have been re-exported from the EC;

ii. antiques (ie over 100 years old);

iii. hunting trophies where hunting permits had been issued to "enhance survival of population;

iv. household goods and personal effects;

+

cases where applications had been made, or contracts or orders existed for which payment had been made or the goods shipped, prior to the date on which the Member State suspended the issue of import permits, but in no case later than 4 July 1989. (In these cases the final date of validity of import permits shall be 31 December 1989).

skid not agree that ivory herd in Hong Kong-and-

h has been exported for Community should be allowed back in ty Commur by despite forceful argumentation This will be the subject of a further letter when I will send a typed version of the Regulation which will probably be effective from 15 August.
