HONG KONG : CONSUMPTION OF LIVE MONKEY BRAINS
Problem
215
A
1.
A letter from Mr Alan Amos MP enclosing a letter from a
schoolboy expressing concern about alleged consumption of the brains
of live monkeys.
Recommendation
B
C
2. I recommend that Mr Maude should reply on the lines of the attached draft. This is based on an answer to a PQ which was
cleared in July 1988 with Hong Kong.
Background
3.
Hong Kong telegram No 2777 of 20 July 1988.
4. Mr Mellor's reply of 21 July 1988 to a PQ by Mr Tony Banks:
Hansard Vol 137 Col 750.
5. Mr Banks claimed in the House of Commons in June 1988 during a Debate on Hong Kong that the consumption of live monkey brains was practised in Hong Kong. There is no reliable evidence of this and the practice, if it ever occurs, is very rare indeed.
