Background

1. Hong Kong informed us on 27 July that there had been no sales of

confiscated items permitted for commercial trade under CITES since

1988.

2. In January 1989 Hong Kong told us they had called for tenders

for such a sale and this information was used in the answer of 10

January 1989 to a question also tabled by Mr Tony Banks. We

therefore checked the position again with Hong Kong who have

confirmed that the proposed sale to which the January answer

referred had been cancelled.
