Mr Andy Stewart (Sherwood): To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, what measures were agreed at the recent European Community environment ministers meeting to ban trade in ivory.

DRAFT ANSWER

| The Environment Council strongly supported the UK Government's

proposal for an immediate ban on the import into the Community of raw and worked ivory. We will be discussing with the Commission this

| week the detailed arangements for the introduction of such a ban.

In the meantime, we have introduced an immediate ban on the import of ivory into the UK.
