MR DAVID STEEL (TWEEDALE, ETTRICK AND LAUDERDALE) To ask the Secretary of State/HMG;
pursuant to his reply to the hon Member for Bosworth, Official Report, 7th June, col 138, what information he has on the Hong Kong Government's urgent review of its position on trading in ivory; and if he will make a statement.

ANSWER:
The Hong Kong Government announced on 9 June their
support for a ban on trade in new ivory. Pending the
outcome of the meeting of the Convention on International
Trade in Endangered Species in October 1989 they have
suspended the issue of licences for imports of raw
ivory from all sources.
