The Hong Kong Government recently reviewed their position in the light of the concerns expressed by us and others in the international community. They announced on 9 June that they had decided to support the proposed ban on trade in raw ivory at the CITES meeting in October. In the meantime they have also suspended the issue of all import licences on new ivory, except small quantities of personal effects. A Special Customs Task Force has also
been established to combat any illegal trade in ivory through Hong Kong.
I hope your constituent will find this information helpful. I am returning his letter. We have taken a copy for our files.
