UK BANS IMPORT OF ALL RAW AND WORKED IVORY
The EC Environment Council last night strongly supported the UK Government's proposal for an immediate ban on the import into the Community of raw and worked ivory.

International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) at their confer in October, Environment Minister, Lord Caithness
said:
"I am delighted that the Council was unanimous in its
concern for the plight of the African Elephant, and
united in its rescive to initiate action to ensure the survival of the species.

European colleagues have so strongly supported my
proposal for a community-wide ban on trade in ivory.
For reasons related to their domestic political
situation, the Danish delegate was unable today to
join the other Member States in deciding to impose
an immediate ban by the Community and blocked my
proposal to implement a decision today. We have,
therefore, been forced to resort to a procedural
device inviting the Commission to bring forward a
formal proposal under Article 10.1(b) of the
Regulations and we all hope that t
