Q7 What pressure will UK put on other countries to support

Appendix I listing?

A7 We have already widely publicised our views on the

seriousness of the plight of the African elephant. The CITES

Conference in October will give us the opportunity to aim our

views further and we shall play a full part in discussions.

Q8 Will UK give African countries financial help to conserve

their elephant populations?

A8 We will give sympathetic consideration to requests for

further help in the area of wildlife conservation and management

efforts.

Will UK allow import of antique ivory?

A9 (1) It is in practice difficult to determine when ivory was

taken, and an exception in favour of antiques could thus provide
