What Member States supported the ban?

A1

The Council was unanimous in its concern for the plight of

the African elephant and was united in its resolve to initiate

action to ensure the survival of the species. Only Denmark were

unable for domestic political reasons to agree to the

introduction of an immediate ban.

Q2 Support for Appendix I listing?

A2

All Member States supported the UK Government view that

there is now a case for transferring the African elephant form

Appendix II to Appendix I of CITES.

Q3 What about existing stocks of ivory?

A3 New applications for import of ivory whatever the date of

acquisition will be refused unless there are exceptional

extenuating circumstances.
